PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system outputting a high quality hard copy at a high speed by optimizing the printer performance through judgment/input of environmental factors in a print mechanism. SOLUTION: The environmental condition detecting system for a hard copy unit 20 comprises an environmental condition sensor 75 having optical characteristics variable in response to variation of the environmental condition, and an optical sensor 85 for detecting variation in the optical characteristics and generating a signal in response thereto. The method for judging the environmental condition in which the hard copy unit 20 operates comprises a step for exposing the sensor 75 having optical characteristics variable in response to variation of the environmental condition to the environmental condition, a step for observing the sensor optically, and a step for generating a signal in response to the optical characteristics of the sensor 75.
