Safety railing, especially for the horse-racing track, includes a rail 52 supported by a plurality of posts 56, the posts being supported in the upright position by the bases 58 which are pegged or bolted to the ground at 66. The rail and upper regions of the posts are resiliently flexible laterally to absorb and resist impact forces on the rail. A spigot and flange formation 60 is provided at the bottom of each post to be snap-locked into a recess 62 in the base, and the bottom part of the post is made rigid with the base by a web 70 attached between the lower part of the post and the base groove 76. When a blow is struck adjacent the bottom part of the post the post does not flex but rather is unfixed from the ground as the spigot and flange formation 60 escapes the base via the channel 64.
