Telesurveillance installation and process for operating this installation. According to the invention, the installation includes at least one magnetic field source (S), one measuring equipment (Em) fixed onto the object (O) whose motion is to be detected, and a control equipment (Ec). The measuring equipment includes a magnetometer able to measure the magnetic field it is surrounded by, means able to test the magnetic field value against a threshold value and means for transmitting a signal which yields the result of this test. The control equipment (Ec) receives this signal and derives therefrom the object displacement and/or its proximity to the source. Applications in the telesurveillance domain, mainly for tracking people.
