PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve heat resistance of parts and brightness and provides a constitution which is suitable for miniaturization and weight reduction in a video display device, in which image is formed by irradiating a display element with a light from a light source side. SOLUTION: An illumination optical system is provided with a first means which forms prescribed polarized light, by making all of polarization directions of rays from the light source side uniform and with a second means which is constituted of a fine periodic grating type polarizing element, guides the prescribed polarized light from a first means side to a display element side after reflection or transmission, and further when different two polarized rays are made incident thereon, one polarized ray is reflected and the other polarized ray is transmitted to separate each other.
