PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a denitrification method and a denitrification equipment which make it possible to stably and efficiently obtain treated water of high quality at a low cost by using autotrophic denitrifying microorganisms having ammonia ions as electron donors and nitrite ions as electron receptors. SOLUTION: The ammonia ions in raw water 11 are oxidized to the nitrite ions in a nitriting chamber 1 and are then sent into an autotrophic denitrifying chamber 3 where the raw water is introduced thereto from a raw water dispensing path 22 and the ammonia ions are denitrified by the autotrophic denitrifying microorganisms. The separated liquid of a solid-liquid separator 4 and the raw water from the raw water dispensing path 32 are introduced into a heterotrophic denitrifying chamber 5 where the liquid and the water are denitrified by the heterotrophic denitrifying microorganisms. The (nitrite) nitric ions remaining in the effluent of the autotrophic denitrifying chamber 3 are denitrified. When the denitrifying ability of the autotrophic denitrifying chamber 3 is degraded, the denitrification in this denitrifying chamber 3 is bypassed by utilizing a bypass flow passage 7 and the denitrification is continued in the heterotrophic denitrifying chamber 5. In addition, the denitrifying ability of the autotrophic denitrifying microorganisms is restored and thereafter the treatment is returned to the ordinary treatment and the denitrification is continued.
