[Also in Divisions B8, E1 and G1] A method of making a leakproof container comprises the steps of applying an impervious layer of fibre-reinforced plastics material to each outer surface of each of a plurality of members having a porous structure, said members being of fibrous material bound by a binding medium into a firm body, testing the impermeability of the layers by exposing the interior of each member to a vacuum or to gas pressure, joining the members by an adhesive to form the desired container, and sealing the joints thus formed. In Fig. 1, a regenerated cellulose foil 9 is laid on the table 1, a gel coating of a coloured isophthalic acid polyester containing a hardener and accelerator is applied to the foil, a further layer of polyester added and a glass fibre mat then being laid on the polyester and pressure applied by roller 9, the process being repeated if necessary to form a lamina 6 on which is placed at least one wood fibre board 7, further pressure then being applied by roller 9, the bars 2 then being moved upward and inward to 2a to bend the foil bearing the lamina 6 against the edges of 7, heating means then being applied to set the resin, the process then being repeated to apply a layer 6 to the other surface and to the edges 7. Fig. 4 shows a cylinder produced by a similar process. |
