PURPOSE: A person identification method and apparatus is provided to preprocess a fingerprint image of a finger joint, to classify the preprocessed image into groups, and to match input fingerprint image of a finger joint with registered one for identifying a person. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises steps of a user inputting a personal identification number at a key input module and placing a finger joint at a position for enabling a CCD camera to correctly take an image of the fingerprint of the finger joint(S10), the key input module transmitting the personal identification number to a microprocessor and the microprocessor checking if the personal identification number exists at a data memory(S20), the microprocessor receiving the image of the fingerprint of the finger joint in a case that the personal identification number exists at the data memory(S30), the microprocessor extracting a ROI(Region Of Interest) from the image of the fingerprint(S40), the microprocessor eliminating an image noise by using a low band filtering scheme(S50), the microprocessor extracting a boundary area for preventing the fingerprint of one finger joint from being grouped with the fingerprint of other finger joints in the same class(S60), the microprocessor extracting the fingerprint of each finger joint(S70), the microprocessor labeling the boundary area of each finger by using a Hough conversion scheme for grouping the fingerprint of each finger joint(S80), the microprocessor independently matching the fingerprint groups with registered ones for determining a similarity(S90), and the microprocessor generating a control signal according to the determined similarity(S100, S110, S120).
