A method and mechanism for re-allocating storage in a computer network. A storage re-allocation procedure is initiated to re-allocate storage from a first host in a storage area network (SAN) to a second host in the SAN. The initiation of the re-allocation procedure is detected and halted in response to detecting I/O corresponding to the storage is in progress. Upon halting the procedure, a user is informed of this fact and is subsequently informed again when the I/O has completed and no further I/O is detected. The first host is then unmounted from the storage and configured so that it will not attempt to remount the storage on reboot. In addition, any other hosts which are detected to be mounted to the storage are also unmounted and configured to reboot without attempting a remount of the storage. Finally, the re-allocation procedure is completed.
