The method involves using a machining laser and a positioning laser (4) for monitoring the machining zone. Light from the positioning laser reflected at the workpiece (2) is detected by a sensor (5) and the position of the machining laser or of the laser head is derived from it. The intensity and/or cross-sectional area of the reflected laser light of the positioning laser is detected.
