END CAP RELIEF VALVE MECHANISM FOR FILTER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove a pollutant comprising core sand and metal broken pieces during the initial operation of an engine using a fluid filter. SOLUTION: The fluid filter comprises a housing 14 that is opened at one end, an end plate 20 having one inlet opening and one outlet opening therein, an annular filter medium 34 disposed in the housing and having an end cap 40 at each end, a valve member 49 for controlling the flow of the fluid through the inlet opening, the end cap remote from the end plate having at least one opening in the central portion thereof and a spring 60 cooperating with the end cap closing the opening to the fluid flow. A thermal sensitive material disposed between the end cap and the spring holds the end cap and the spring and precludes the oil flow through the cap until a predetermined temperature of oil is attained during the initial operation of the engine. Thereafter, the end cap and the spring are operated to open in response to predetermined pressure differential across the end cap.
