PURPOSE: A synchronous machine rotor is provided to obtain a substantially greater capacity for power generation and achieve simplicity in coil design and in coil support design. CONSTITUTION: A rotor for a synchronous machine(10) comprises a rotor core(22) having a rotor axis(20), a pair of super-conducting coil windings(34) mounted on the rotor core, each of the coil windings in a respective plane that is parallel to and offset from the rotor axis. The super-conducting coils(34) have a race-track shape.
