Production of block copolymers comprises: (1) (co)polymerizing a diene to form a first block; and (2) copolymerizing a polar monomer with the first block. Both steps being effected in the presence of a catalyst comprising the reaction product of a rare earth metal alcoholate and an organolithium, organomagnesium, organozinc, organoaluminum or boron-containing alkylating agent. An Independent claim is also included for a block copolymer comprising a first block consisting of a linear diene (co)polymer and a second block consisting of a polymer having multiple hydroxy, epoxy and/or alkoxysilyl functions.
