PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating material composition which has low foaming properties and excels in mechanical stability, chemical stability, water washability, and operating characteristics, and to prepare a paper coating copolymer latex from which a coated paper having excellent adhesive strength, printing gloss, and ink receptivity can be obtained. SOLUTION: A process for producing the paper coating copolymer latex comprises copolymerizing 100 pts.wt. monomeric mixture composed of 10-80 wt.% conjugated diolefin, 0.5-10 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and 10-89.5 wt.% monoolefin copolymerizable therewith with 0.1-10 pts.wt. compound represented by formula (1) (wherein A is a 2-10C alkylene group; (n) is an integer of 1-100; (m) is an integer of 2-15; and M is Na, K or NH4 ). Preferably, a cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon having one unsaturated bond in the ring is added to effect copolymerization.
