Method has the following steps: (1) the difference (deltaT) between highest and lowest temperature values (Tmax, Tmin) is determined (2) the difference is compared with a threshold value (Ts) (3) further operating parameters are used to determine a further auxiliary value (H+) which indicates whether the difference amount should be greater than the threshold value (4) if the difference amount is smaller than the threshold value, but should be greater as indicated by the auxiliary value an error is indicated. An Independent claim is made for an arrangement for monitoring temperature sensor operation in a motor vehicle combustion engine. The auxiliary value is derived from parameters relating to whether the engine is operating with a small cooling capacity or a high cooling capacity and is determined from engine mass flow, engine speed, oil and exhaust gas temperatures, etc.
