A fluid pressure regulating valve comprises a tubular housing 10, the bore of which is stepped, a cylindrical sleeve 15 disposed in the bore and biased towards its blind end by a spring 17, and a piston 19 movable within the sleeve. Upon the application of fluid pressure to the valve inlet 12, the piston 19 is moved, against the force of springs 20, 21, from the position shown into one in which an annular groove 24, formed in the piston, communicates with an outlet 23 formed in the sleeve 15, so allowing fluid to flow from the inlet 12 to an outlet 13. Application of a higher pressure raises the piston still further so reclosing outlet 23 until the pressure is sufficient to raise the piston above the outlet, at which stage, full flow through the outlet takes place. In a liquid fuel pumping apparatus, for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine, fuel is supplied to a port 31 from where it passes through a filter 25 into outlet 13, which outlet constitutes the outlet of a vane type feed pump. Fluid from the pump outlet 30, which also communicates with the valve inlet 12, passes to an injector pump 50 through a throttle 51 and through an excess fuel valve 52, the arrangement being such that valve 52 permits a supply of excess fuel for starting purposes after which it becomes inoperative, whilst the regulating valve serves to maintain steady the pressure at the outlet 30 by bypassing excess pressures to the valve outlet 13.</p> |
