PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent impairment of improving fuel consumption by fuel cut by conducting a measure to engine stalling when an engine is quickly speed- reduced in a lock-up state without setting a torque converter in a slipping state. SOLUTION: A controller 9 controls an automatic transmission 2 for changing speed through solenoids 6 and 7 based on a throttle opening TH and an output rotation speed No, and it conducts lock-up control to the torque converter 3 through a solenoid 8. In inertial traveling in the lock-up state to set the throttle opening HT to be almost zero, the controller 9 sets the torque converter 3 to have the minimum engagement capacity for inertial traveling in such a range as to generate no slipping. In getting to be quickly speed-reduced, the controller 9 releases lock-up, but the small lock-up capacity speedily completes it to prevent engine stalling. The engagement capacity for inertial traveling is determined based on a reverse drive torque detection value of an engine, and this detection value is corrected by an adjusted part of torque in accordance with actuation/non-actuation of an engine drive accessory, thereby the engagement capacity for inertial traveling is determined.
