The method involves placing notes in an input compartment, separating them to check for a sorting criterion or combination of criteria and allocating them to an output compartment(s). Fewer output compartments are present than required for sorting; in a first sorting process a group(s) of notes with different criteria or combinations of criteria is placed in an output compartment and the group(s) formed subjected to a further sorting process(es). The method involves placing notes in a stack in an input compartment, separating the notes to check them for a sorting criterion or a combination of criteria and allocating them to one or more output compartments. Fewer output compartments are present than required for sorting; in a first sorting process at least one group of notes with at least two different sorting criteria or combinations of search criteria are placed in an output compartment and the or each of the groups formed are subjected to at least one further sorting process. AN Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for sorting bank notes.
