The lock up control for a motor vehicle hydraulic transmission torque convertor provides a learning control for an initial command oil pressure, for lock up control of several lock up regions, according to the vehicle operating conditions. The learning control sets the initial command oil pressure by adding a correction to each of the regions. It sets an initial command oil pressure for one of the regions by correcting using the prior values from the other regions.
