PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp exhibiting long life by surely preventing quartz crack or damage near a tip periphery of molybdenum foil at a container sealing end part of an arc tube even by lighting for a long time. SOLUTION: The arc tube of this metal halide lamp is equipped with a container made of quartz, the molybdenum foil joined with a pair of electrodes and airtightly sealed in an end of the tube, and metal halide enclosed in the tube as a luminous material. A solid solution layer of metal and molybdenum for generating silicate by reacting with quartz is formed on a surface of the tip part of the molybdenum foil at the electrode joining part, which is sealed at the container end part of the arc tube.
