A convolution filter performs filtering on an image and the response properties of the filter are selected so that the image signal obtained has less frequency components that are higher than the Nyquist rate as compared to the original digital image. The amount of information is also increased and the second image is formed on the recording medium with an increased density, so that the image has higher resolution.
