PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure for setting and stretching a timing belt whereby a supporting member for the timing belt can be arranged highly accurately, and to provide a recorder for scanning a carriage with a loaded recording head by driving the timing belt. SOLUTION: There are provided the timing belt 81 to be set and stretched, the supporting member 82 for supporting the timing belt, a frame 82 for engaging the supporting member, and an exciting means 84 for exciting the supporting member against a tension of the timing belt. Two grooves 82a and 82b for holding the frame are set to the supporting member, and inner faces 82aa and 82ba of diagonally opposite grooves are formed to be parallel to a direction of the tension of the timing belt. Accordingly, even when the supporting member is pulled by the timing belt, the inner faces of the diagonally opposite grooves formed to be parallel to the tension direction of the timing belt are butted against the frame, so that an inclination of the supporting member is eliminated.
