PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To performs the switching between the LR mode and MS mode under conditions with a small calculation quantity and to perform bit allocation by using information calculated in the switching between the LR mode and MS mode. SOLUTION: In an encoding method for a stereophonic signal which divides an input signal into subbands by a filter bank block 2 and allocates the number of quantized bit to each subband by a bit allocation block 5, an M/S entropy calculation block 3 calculates energy or auditory entropy by the subbands and a signal for switching the mode between the LR mode and MS mode is sent out to an M/S stereo tool 4 according to the calculated energy value or entropy value.
