The column has an upright (2) ensuring rigidity and an enclosure forming the outer surface of the column, and providing a space to allow passage of cables and fitting of connectors. Openings (23) are provided in the face of the column to fit connector sockets (24). Connection to the building cabling is provided by a cable bundle (27,28) entering the column at top or bottom.
