Varistors with high 'n' and controllable 'C' values for circuit stabilising can be produced from sintered ZnO compacts contg. additives. Additives comprise : (a) BiF3 0.05-10.0 mole % (preferred range 0.3-2.5%), (b) BiF3 + 0.05-10.0 (preferred 0.1-3.0)% CoF2, MnF2, SnF2, NiF2 or CrF3, (c) BiF3 + 0.05-5.0% CoO or MnO, (d) BiF3 + 0.05-5.0% CoO + 0.05-5.0% MnF2 or CrF3, (e) BiF3 + 0.05-5.0% MnO + 0.05-5.0% CoF2 or CrF3. A wide range of values can be obtained by varying comp., processing conditions and thickness of part.
