Fermentation (M1) process comprising pre-heating organic bulk particulate solid residues prior to release into fermentation tank, is new. The residues are warmed to preferably 70 deg C by effluent heat from an internal combustion engine powered by biogas generated by the fermentation process. An Independent claim is also included for an assembly (I) with a fermentation vessel (12) holding the pre-heated bulk organic residues (10). Bulk organic residues are discharged from a hopper (20) through a pipe (22) under piston (28) pressure. The pipe has a jacket (44) heated by the heat liberated from the fermentation products.
