Nucleic acid (I) that: (i) encodes at least that part of a protein kinase (II) of the mitogenic signaling cascade that interacts with a porin channel; (ii) hybridizes to (i); or (iii) is a homolog or derivative of (i) or (ii), is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) isolated recombinant vector containing (I); (2) protein or peptide (IIa) encoded by (I); (3) screening method for compounds (A) that modulate porin channels, especially VDAC (voltage-dependent anion channel) or BAX, or bacterial channels; and (4) screening methods for identifying compounds (B) that activate raf.
