PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing adjusting device securely suppressing knocking noises (abnormal noises) due to the lock releasing at low hydraulic loading capable of using kinds of lock pins and exhausting the oil in which the air is included as an initial pressure out of the device. SOLUTION: A purge passage 24 communicating a retardation side hydraulic chamber 10 and a back pressure part 14a of a housing hole 14 are set at a vane 6a of a rotor 6. When starting an engine, the oil pressure from an oil pump is fed into the retardation side hydraulic chamber 10. The oil including the air is purged on way from the device via the back pressure part 14a of the housing hole 14 and a purging hole 17. When the air is purged, the residual oil pressure is produced by the oil fed into the back pressure part 14a. The lock releasing is prevented with the residual pressure by improving the lock releasing oil pressure. On changing into the retardation oil pressure, the lock is released with the oil pressure by pressing a top end of a lock pin 15 into the releasing direction withstanding only an energizing force of an energizing means 16.
