The invention relates to a device for partially carburizing parts while using a process gas that serves as carburizing medium. According to the invention, the part is exposed to the process gas at a carburizing temperature. The device has a covering that shields a non-carburized surface (15, 26) of the part (10) from the process gas. The covering is formed by a solid covering body (17, 21, 30) which, at the carburizing temperature, touches the part (10) with almost no gaps at least in a boundary area extending up to the carburizing medium thereby preventing the process gas from reaching the non-carburized surface (15, 26) of the part.
