PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a measuring device for automatically measuring the sheet lateral central position during the carrying of a master roll. SOLUTION: When the master roll 60 is transferred by a ceiling transfer machine 10 comprising arms 12R and 12L and chucking parts 14R and 14L provided on the arms, the sheet lateral central position of the master roll is measured. Origin positions separated by a distance L are determined in the two arms. This measuring device comprises lateral pulse generators 13L and 13R for measuring the moving quantities c and d of the two arms from the origin positions when the master roll is chucked by the chucking parts; lateral roll end position measuring devices 15L and 15R for measuring the distance from a prescribed position of each arm to the roll end part of the master roll; and a sheet lateral central position calculating device 20 for performing the calculating processing of the sheet lateral central position on the basis of the information measured by each measuring means and internal data preliminarily stored therein.
