<p>A semiconductor laser has one or more regions for example, a gain region, a phase region, a front grating region, and a rear grating region to which a respective electrical current is applied to control the operation of the laser. Means for example, a heat balancing region is associated with the or each region which has substantially the same electrical and thermal characteristics as its associated region and which is in thermal communication with the associated region. In operation, the total input electrical power applied to each region and the associated means it substantially constant. Preferably, the temperature stabilised device is a four section tuneable laser fabricated using either buried ridge, or surface ridge architectures.</p> |
