PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a larger quantity of light in spite of the tubular diameter of a glass bulb smaller than a conventional one, and to take the light all around in a rare gas discharge lamp with the structure that an outer surface of the glass bulb is provided with at least two or more outer surface electrodes to generate dielectric barrier discharge through the glass bulb. SOLUTION: The outer surface electrodes 23C and 23D of the glass bulb 3 are respectively formed of a transparent electrode, and the light is emitted all around the discharge lamp. Each transparent outer surface electrode 23C and 23D is formed to have a width thereof in the tube axial direction of the glass bulb 3 and to surround the outer surface of the glass bulb along the periphery of the bulb, and the outer surface electrodes 23C and 23D are provided with the predetermined space from each other in the tube axial direction of the glass bulb. Since the distance d between the outer surface electrodes 23C and 23D can be decided independently of the tube diameter of the glass bulb 3, even if the glass bulb 3 becomes narrow, a distance to be required for insulation between the transparent electrodes 23C and 23D can be secured.
