A graded mineral material within a grain range of 8/0mm to 16/0mm, is applied in at least one layer to a lane of a road or track, evenly distributed, and compressed by being rolled at least once. The applied layer has a thickness of between 10mm and 30mm, and is dampened before compression. Compression is by rolling motion of the wheels of at least one axle of the applicator appliance, while the axle is subjected to a vibration load.
