PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an isoxazole derivative having excellent insulin secretion promoting action and hypoglycemic action and low toxicity and, accordingly, useful as pharmaceuticals, especially agent for the treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications and provide a compound useful as the agent. SOLUTION: The objective compound is expressed by general formula (I) [one of R1 and R2 is H or a substituent and the other one is a (substituted) cyclic group; W is a bond or a bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Y is a group expressed by OR3 (R3 is H, a (substituted) hydrocarbon group, a (substituted) heterocyclic group or a (substituted) acyl group) or a carboxy group which may be esterified or amidated]. The present invention further discloses salts or prodrugs of the compound.
