New (fluoro)alkyl group-containing borate salts (I) of mono- to tri-valent cations other than potassium and barium, have an asymmetrical anion structure. (Fluoro)alkyl group-containing borate salts of formula (I), are new. Mn+(BFx(CyF2y + 1 - zHz)4 - x)n<-> (I) x = 1-3; y = 1-8; z = 0 to (2y + 1); M = mono-tri-valent cation (i.e. n = 3), with K and Ba being excluded but including Li, NR<1>R<2>R<3>R<4>, PR<5>R<6>R<7>R<8>, P(NR<5>R<6>)k(R<7>)m(R<8>)4 - k - m, C(NR<5>R<6>)(NR<7>R<8>)(NR<9>R<10>), or an aromatic heterocyclic cation especially containing N, S or O; k = 1-4; m = 1-3; k + m = <= 4; R<1> - R<4> = CyF2y + 1 - zHz; and R<5> - R<10> = H or as for R<1> - R<4>. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of the salts.
