PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article transfer device that can eliminate defectiveness such as the wear of a moving rotor and the deformation of a support body and prevent the scatter of chips from gears meshed with each other. SOLUTION: This article transfer device has a pair of freely approaching/ separating clamp-conveying devices 14 for conveying an article 6 between shelves while clamping both side faces of the article 6. A conveying drive means 43 for driving the clamp-conveying devices 14 is composed of rotating drive shafts 44 provided at a pair of clamp-conveying devices 14; driven side bevel gears 45 provided at both rotating drive shafts 44; a spline shaft 46 rotated by a motor 48; and a pair of movable side bevel gears 47 fitted to the outer periphery of the spline shaft 46, meshed with the driven side bevel gears 45 and movable in an axis direction B. The bevel gears 45, 47 are provided in a gear box 53 mounted to the clamp-conveying device 14, and the gear box 53 moves in the axis direction B of the spline shaft 46 integrally with the movable side bevel gear 47.
