PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nitrile compound useful as an intermediate for herbicide and its producing method. SOLUTION: The nitrile compound shown by formula (2) (wherein, R1 and R2 are each independently a 1-6C alkyl group) is obtained by reacting a benzene compound shown by formula (1) (wherein, R1 and R2 are each independently a 1-6C alkyl group) with hexamethylenetetramine and an acid catalyst, and then reacting the product with hydroxylamine, and dehydrating.
