PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a technique capable of adjusting output power to a large extent, in a state of maintaining high thermal efficiency in a premixing compression self-igniting engine, in which a fresh air in an intake passage is fed into a combustion chamber and the air-fuel mixture formed therein is compressed to be burned by self-ignition. SOLUTION: This premixing compression self-igniting engine is operated, by carrying out a fresh air temperature-lowering process for lowering the fresh air temperature by a prescribed width for every detection of knocking start, in the engine in an equivalent ratio raising process for raising the equivalent ratio of the air-fuel mixture, while keeping the fresh air temperature constant to raise the output power of the engine.
