PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrically driven display using the polarization rotation characteristics of a spiral nematic liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: A helical nematic liquid crystal layer enclosed in a space formed between two polarizers (2, 5) and a uniaxial birefringence means (11) which corrects the residual birefringence of the liquid crystal layer so as to reduce a contrast ratio are combined in the display. In this display, the uniformity of the angle distribution of the contrast ratio is improved as compared with a device without a correction element. The display is used as a display unit for computers and a direct or projective display for television images. |
