The identification of Thunnus alalunga in preserved tunny comprises amplification of a 187 pb fragment (BDR) of the cytochrome to gene in the mitochondrial DNA by sequential use of two endonucleases. This facilitates differentiation relative to other species used as substitutes for Thunnus alalunga in cans.
