A short-coherence interferometer measurement beam is focused onto an axially-adjustable retro-reflector (10) ahead of an optical scanner. This includes a rotary scanning mirror (12), and rotary scanning system with further optics (14, 15) for telecentric alignment with the eye. Passing through the pupil, the beam measures at various internal locations of the eye. Scanner optic (14) focal length is similar to that of the objective (15). Focal length of the scanner illumination optic (9) is about that of the eye focal length on the object side, i.e. the same as the cornea-fundus focal length times the group index of the eye for short coherence interferometry. Z-scanning is effected by movement of a retroreflector in the measurement beam.
