PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an ultrafine particle of a metal chalcogenide, which comprises a single piece or several pieces to several tens of pieces thereof and is useful for a light-emitting/receiving device, with a high degree of freedom for selecting a position and a size. SOLUTION: A method comprises providing a chalcogen thin film 3 on a sharpening point 2 of a glass fiber 1, after that, bringing the sharpening point 2 into contact with a metal 5 physically and forming the ultrafine particle 6 of the metal chalcogenide on the sharpening point 2 by an interdiffusion reaction of the chalcogen with the metal. When the glass fiber 1, which is provided with the chalcogen thin film 3 directly on the sharpening point 2, is used, the formed ultrafine particle 6 of the metal chalcogenide transfers to a predetermined position of the metal 5. When the glass fiber 1, which is provided with the chalcogen thin film 3 through a silane adsorption membrane 4, is us ed, the ultrafine particle 6 of the metal chalcogenide is fixed to the sharpening point 2.
