PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording material detecting mechanism capable of precisely detecting the size and the presence/absence of a recording material to be stored, in image recording using a hermetical-structure, magazine. SOLUTION: This recording material detecting mechanism is provided with the box-shaped and hermetical-structure magazine having a lid body opened/ closed freely, having a light transmitting portion at least in a part of the box body, and storing the recording material, a loading part loading the magazine in a prescribed position, disposed corresponding to the light transmitting portion of the magazine loaded in the prescribed position, and having a sensor for detecting the presence/absence of the recording material in the light transmitting portion, by an optical means, and a determination part determining, at least, either one of the presence/absence or size of the recording material to be stored in the magazine.
