The invention concerns a method for coding a source mesh (M) representing a three-dimensional object or scene, using a simple mesh (M0) having a reduced number of facets defined each by vertices and edges, and coefficients in a wavelet base, corresponding to local modifications of said simple mesh (M0), and enabling to determine each time a parametering function of the mesh. The invention is characterised in that said method comprises a step which consists in eliminating the effect of at least a wavelet coefficient (d; d1, , dn) verifying at least one criterion of non-essentiality, so as to provide a partial mesh (M'), corresponding to a partial representation of said source mesh (M).
