Method has the following steps: recording of a number of acoustic signals during a cold jointing process for joining together plate type components, processing of the acoustic signals, evaluation of the signals, using suitable hardware and software and generation of a corresponding output signal. An Independent claim is made for a device for testing the quality of cold joints, especially riveted, clinched or crimped joints. Monitoring of the sound generated during the jointing process enables conclusions to be made about the quality of the joint and also the condition of the jointing tools. E.g. the loading of the crystal structure during riveting or clinching can be determined by monitoring sound frequencies outside the audible range.
