The combination switch and braking device comprises a handbrake unit (1) with a brake lever (2) and a brake lever housing (3) to start the switch movement. There is a switch mechanism that is made up of a coil spool (9) for winding up of the switch rope, as well as winding and holding device for fixing the coil spool in one of several switch positions. The handbrake unit turns about an axis that runs outside and parallel to the steering axis. The handbrake unit may have one or more starting steps with an operating process that can be switched and achieve, at the same time, a braking operation. The handbrake housing may have two support arms (6) that are connected, via a turning axis, with one or two carrier bodies (4, 5) that also receive the switch mechanism. Both the carrier bodies may be firmly coupled together via a snap-connection.
