PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intake device for an internal combustion engine provided with an air cleaner, having a compact shape, and capable of accomplishing its primary function. SOLUTION: This intake device for an internal combustion engine has an air duct 4 for inhaling the air, and the air cleaner 6 mounted on the downstream side of the air duct and provided with a filter 32 for removing dust from the intake air. The air cleaner 6 has an upstream side chamber part 24 and a downstream side chamber 30 respectively disposed by being horizontally displaced, and the whole shape thereof is almost flatly formed in the horizontal direction. The upstream side chamber part forms a first space part 22 for expanding the air inhaled from the air duct, and the downstream side chamber forms a second space 28 for horizontally disposing the filter at its bottom position. The first space communicates with the second space through a communication part 26. The communication part is formed in a shape corresponding to the bottom shape of the second space so that the intake air from the upstream side chamber part should uniformly be passed to the filter. The upstream side chamber part can be removed by bordering the filter.
