The compact storage unit comprises several carriages (1) movable on a pair of rails (2) by means of wheels, shelves or similar for storage purposes, drive motors (4) coupled to drive shafts (8) for moving the carriages and batteries (5) to drive the motors. Since current for driving a motor comes from the battery inside the carriage, no external cabling is required on the carriage. Each carriage has a hand grip with a switch (3) for moving it to the left or the right. A carriage can move itself by its own force together with other carriages which require to be moved. Alternatively, a carriage can send control signals to the other carriages so that a carriage which is adjacent to an empty space which is to be filled moves first and thereafter one carriage at a time is moved until a desired empty space is freed on the rails. Preferably, signal traffic is by infra red or radio. |
