PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an N-alkyl imide compound which is useful as an intermediate for pharmaceutical products, and the like. SOLUTION: By reacting an imide compound represented by formula (1) with an alkylation agent represented by the formula: X-CH2-R' in a hydrophobic solvent in the presence of a solid inorganic base and a phase transfer catalyst, an N-alkyl imide compound represented by formula (3) is produced, where the reaction is performed in the presence of water of 1.5-12 wt.% to the weight of the solid inorganic base.
