The engine is operated increasing an output increasing speed in response to requirement, while limiting the output increasing speed within an increment ΔLelimit or an increase rate Kelimit, until the second stage catalytic converter reaches to a prescribed warming-up degree T2 after the first stage catalytic converter reaches to the prescribed warming-up degree, or until a time Co estimated as establishment of the condition therein is expected passes, and an amount of fuel is thereafter increased or decreased according to control calculation based on an input data to be operated.
