Determining optimal yield of a component from a multicomponent mixture

Optimal yield of a target compound obtainable from a multicomponent mixture comprises:

(a) determining the initial composition of the mixture.

(b) dissolving the mixture in a solvent;

(c) placing a sample of the solvent solution in a plurality of vessels;

(d) adding a different derivatising agent to each vessel to react the agents with the samples.

(e) analysing the contents of the vessels to determine the compositions of the liquid and solids in the vessels.

(f) comparing the analyses determined in step (e) to determine which derivatising agent provides the best recovery of target compound. Typically the optimum yield of a target stereoisomer present in an isomeric mixture can be determined.
