Optimal yield of a target compound obtainable from a multicomponent mixture comprises: <SL> <LI>(a) determining the initial composition of the mixture. <LI>(b) dissolving the mixture in a solvent; <LI>(c) placing a sample of the solvent solution in a plurality of vessels; <LI>(d) adding a different derivatising agent to each vessel to react the agents with the samples. <LI>(e) analysing the contents of the vessels to determine the compositions of the liquid and solids in the vessels. <LI>(f) comparing the analyses determined in step (e) to determine which derivatising agent provides the best recovery of target compound. </SL> Typically the optimum yield of a target stereoisomer present in an isomeric mixture can be determined. |
